One of the essential elements of the culture of the Slavic peoples - is embroidered on the towels. The oldest specimens found are IX-X centuries, but, of course, much of the tissue product has not survived to our days. Traditional embroidery on towels familiar to us, mainly on the works of arts and crafts related to the XIX century. In those days, embroidery on towels was not just an ornament, on the contrary, she carried a deep hidden meaning. Towels were used in all the important rituals that sanctify the main points in a person's life, from birth and ending with death. Embroidery on towels carried symbolic meaning, all designs and drawings used in it is a request for myths and, as historians believe, were associated with the ancient cult of ancestors. Especially important was the embroidery on towels in the commission of the wedding ceremony.
It was used several kinds of towels, each of which had its own meaning and name. Of course, the embroidery on the towels had to be appropriate. Typically, the bride began to prepare a dowry from his childhood, and by the time she married had accumulated dozens of towels, embroidered shirts and other household items or clothes. Many of these items were necessary for the commission of the ritual. Even to this day came the echoes of those traditions in wedding ceremonies continue to use the embroidered towels.
But overall, the towels are no longer perceived as an element of worship. Today, they are ordinary household items, and embroidery on towels plays only a decorative function.
